Last day in New Orleans, and it is what most of the town considers a recovery day after Mardi Gras.
We were up bright and early however, for a Jazz Brunch at The Court of Two Sisters in the French Quarter. After a big meal of pecan pie, grits and grillades, turtle soup, shrimp creole, bananas foster on pancakes, jambalaya and cajun corn salad, we spent the rest of the day wandering the French Quarter, checking out the French Market and picking up some food for the dinner I am cooking for Lee and Anthony tonight, as a thank you for letting us stay.
I bought a big loaf of typical New Orleans French bread.
We dropped into Cafe Du Monde for some hot beignets and chicory coffee before starting the walk home.
On the way back I stopped in at Napoleon House for a Muffuletta, one of my favourite sandwiches in the world. On toasty foccacia style bread, topped with olive salad, provolone cheese, salamis, hams, mortadella… originating from New Orleans and Napoleon House are well known for many thinking they make better ones that Central Grocery, the original inventors of the sandwich. We sat and waited in a corner of the restaurant that has been open since 1914, for a takeaway sandwich to eat while we walked back.
When we got home I got started on a Lobster Chowder, which we had with garlic french bread, Australian wine, and finished off with some lamingtons I made earlier. If you don’t know what lamingtons are, see my post about the ones I made on Australia Day this year here!
Ive never eaten gator, but ive heard its quite good.
