Angela and I had never been to Melbourne Cup. It wasn’t really our scene – sitting around in expensive dresses drinking overpriced champagne. But for some reason, this year it was really calling to us.

It is a world famous event, and having lived in Melbourne for 7 years I felt like I should really go – this year was my last chance. And Angela and I both had handsome dates to accompany us – so why not!

I’d just gotten back from my month in Adelaide, and flew back in early so we could go. We bought our tickets, bought our outfits, and we were ready to go.

In the morning Edward, Jordan and Angela came to mine at 10AM and we had a breakfast of fruit, croissants and champagne. Cheers to a beautiful, sunny Melbourne day!

Angela and I put the finishing touches on our outfits, and off we went on the train to the racecourse.

We got the racecourse and picked up a map to plan out our day.

We picked up a bottle of champagne each, and head towards the track. We set up right in front with a prime view of the horses.

We drank, laughed and I started to get a little sunburnt. Edward was a gentleman and gave me his coat to protect my poor shoulders.

As the day wore on, the crowd got more and more drunk, and everyone started chatting to people around them. It was such an awesome day – such a community, so much excitement in the air.

Jordan placed a few bets and won! The rest of us just looked up and cheered every time the horses went past.

Afterwards we head towards the city and made out way into Chinatown still dressed up in our finest. We got a table full of noodles and dumplings and stir fries, and then made our way back to mine.

I almost made it home without removing my heels, but in typical Melbourne cup fashion I carried my shoes and walked barefoot the last five minutes home. It wouldn’t be Cup Day otherwise!
